RE: Blue Ridge Parkway

We stay on the Blue Ridge Parkway all the time.
The NC campgrounds are our favorite because of highier elevations(cooler).
The cg fee is $16 or $8 with golden age access pass.
There are no hookups. You will not need hookups if you are driving daily.
We stay a week at a time in one cg without any hookups.
They all have fresh water and dump station.
The sites are very small (built in the 50s)but most will handle a 30 foot rv.
All are paved and all have a host.
The two I like most are Doughton and Mt Pisgah.

OK, we just got our travel guide from Vermont today.
We have not had a chance to look at it yet, but I did see a camping guide.

RE: Mount Airy , NC

Andy Griffith grew up there. Its a fun place to visit and pretty little town.
There is the diner where you can get a porkchop sandwich right beside Floyds barber shop. There is also a Andy museume thats full of old Mayberry history.
I never spent more than a day at a time there, I would think 2 days would be enough.
I dont know about the camping in Mt Airy but the Blue Ridge Parkway is only about 15 miles from there.

RE: Vermont help

Thanks Bill & Tom Cat!
We are getting pretty excited about our trip to Vermont.
We havent set a date yet, we are still doing our research.
What you are saying here sounds like us, No traffic and lots of twisty back roads.
I read some about the North East Kingdom, sounds great.

Vermont help

The wife and I are planning a late summer trip to Vermont.
We have never been there and need all the help we can get.
We usually go to Colorado and Utah but with the fuel prices we decided that we wanted to go somewhere closer to home and different.
Vermont is going to be a new adventure for us this year.
We are very interested in the back roads, dirt roads and forest roads as we will be taking our small dual sport motorcycles for dirt road adventure riding.
We do not plan on taking the MH on any of these roads. We will headquarter somewhere else and travel to the back roads on our bikes.
We are also interested in any old ghost towns if there are any?
I would also like to know what the weather is like in Vermont?
Is it humid and hot like the south?
I also need to know about roads, are there any steep roads I need to avoid? We have some pretty steep climbs around here in the mountains of NC as we go up on the Blue Ridge Parkway several times a year. I dont want to get into trouble with hills.
I sure hope there are some Vermont residents or travelers out there that can help us.
If you dont want to post, feel free to send me a personal message.

Shadow Cruiser is coming out with a 2009 16ft with a walkaround queen size bed.
Thanks, that sounds pretty good. We looked at the Funfinders a couple of times.

small light weight tt

We are in the market for a small lite weight TT to do some boondocking in. I am looking at something with bath, shower and holding tanks etc.
Who makes a small TT equiped like this that is lite weight?
We can go as short as 18 feet if we need to.
I looked at the Flagstaff 18FBR which weighs just over 3000 pounds and liked it real well?

RE: How many ready??

I am in no hurry to go back south. I live so far back in the mountains of NC that its more peaceful here than anywhere else. Our property backs up to the US Forest service. It is 10 miles of dirt roads to get to our house. I only see about 2 to 3 cars all day long. It is a 45 minute drive to town for food and supplies from here and 45 minutes back. I see a lot more people when we are camping in the RV than I do at home. I keep the RV in town at my nephews place with full hookups including wifi. We go there and stay some as well. We also get on the Blue Ridge Parkway and camp for a week or so at a time.
There is also a campground just one mile away from our home as well. We visit my daughter who is the cg host at her mh about 4 nights a week. We sit by the fire and eat smoors and watch all the campers come and go, then we go home and sleep in our own bed.
We have a lot of fun here, I am in no hurry to drive to the city, get in the RV, get in traffic and go south.
Come November and the cold weather starts knocking at the door, we will be ready to go.

The Airstream owners group share their driveways with each other.
This info may have to be organized by state?

RE: Considering Smokies over Northwest trip

Lot of talk here about no hook ups. You will not need hook ups. The BRP and the Smokeys are in my back yard! Almost all the cgs have fresh water and a dump station. All you have to do is keep your batteries charged and make a couple of runs a week with your rig to the dump station which is included with the camping fees. By the way the Blue Ridge Parkway is the most visited Nat Park in the US.

RE: winterizing without heat.

We leave during the winter with no heat on all the time. I now live in what used to be our weekend home. When I built it I plumbed it so I could drain the lines. Its no different than then, you just got to get all the liquid out of the lines or add antifreeze where you cant. My home is actually eaiser than my RV. I have my hot water heater drain plunbed back into my drain lines so I can drain it. All my pipes are elevated so they will drain backward so I dont have to blow any lines out.
mtnman
Here are my instructions:
WHEN LEAVING (WINTER)
A. Turn off hot water heater in breaker box in kitchen
B. Go to cabin back porch to power box and Turn off well pump
C. Go back outside to back of cabin and open both (2) drains in covered 4-inch white PVC pipe (Careful with one on left, its plastic)
D. Go back inside Lodge.
1. Open hot and cold water in kitchen, bathroom & shower
2. Close shower curtain
3. Flush toilet (hold handle down until tank is drained)
4. Put antifreeze in toilet bowl use plunger to push to back
5. Put antifreeze in sink drains kitchen & bathroom
E Go in closet to water heater and open drain on bottom of water heater, (red handle) turn counter-clockwise

ryoung is right, I live in western NC in the hills and it gets cold all over this state. You may want to try SC along the beaches, its not as cold.

RE: Applying For Work

The general location would be nice to know such as the state.
I would not be interested in south Florida during the summer months.
I would not want to be in Colorado in the winter.

Motorsports Nascar

I understand that there is a big demand for workampers in motorsports such as Nascar. I did a search but nothing showed up in this forum.
We live in the middle of Nascar country and I think that would be fun for us.
Does anyone on this forum work for Nascar or know of anyone that does?
Does anyone know how we could get started with workamping with Nascar?

RE: Oh man, this is nuts...

It is hard to get shed of everything. We still have 2 homes and lots of stuff so I cant say much but I will add;
When you are on your way out of this world what is the benefit of keeping it?
Its time to get the most out of life while you still have a desire to travel.
Plus, the kids dont want to deal with all this stuff either, so maybe thats a reason we should just take care of it now.
I guess a therapist may suggest something better than a bunch of happy traveling old seniors?

Passport

We need to get our passports.
I know a lot of you folks already have passports.
I would like for you to share your information with us.
What is the process, what do we do first?
How long does it take?
How much does it cost each?
Are there any corners we can cut to save time and money?
Is there a web site where I can get the info? (I still want to hear your experiences)
